As of 2004, Nagano is the 49th most populous city in Japan. It was founded in 1897 and is located in the middle of the Japanese Alps; it is famous in Japan for its ski resorts and for having hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. From 1994 to 2004, the population has increased by less than 1%.
