One noteworthy place to visit in this area is the Yasukuni shrine: The spirits of those who died for Japan in several conflicts (the Meiji Restoration, the Satsuma Rebellion, the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, the First World War, the Manchurian Incident, the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War) are enshrined here. Written records can be found indicating the name, the origin and the date/place of death of the 2.5 million enshrined. Recent official visits by the Japanese prime ministers have caused
some controversy as 14 class-A war criminals are enshrined at this location.
The area can be reached through the Kudanshita subway station on
the Tokyo metro Hanzomon line [station Z06], the Tokyo metro Tozai line [station T07]
and the Toei Shinjuku line [station S05].
